Kowhatu Toi - Festival of Arts

Title: Kowhatu Toi

Introductory text:
LO (Week 1): To draw whakaahua for kowhatu toi

This week we are learning about kowhatu toi (stone art). We have learnt about different Maori patterns such as the Koru, Niho Taniwha, Mangopare, Ritorito and Manawa just to name a few. We practiced drawing each pattern in our workbook provided by Whaea Mel.

My favourite pattern to draw was the Koru. Naa mau tohi ae Mangopare. pe mau talanoa kihe Kowhatu Toi pea koe  Koru koe new life.

Pea mau faiako ke mau ave ae maka ki he first

On Monday we started our lesson on Maori patterns learning about the symbols and their meaning. We were given a workbook to track our work and also practice drawing the different patterns. I enjoyed painting the rocks with the seal - I learn the importance of why we need to seal the rocks and how to apply the paint to the rocks. I learnt it was important to paint the rocks lightly in order for them to dry quickly. The koru was the first Maori pattern I learnt to draw. I found some of the other patterns challenging to draw but in the end once I learnt how to sketch it was easy to practice and perfect my art.

Closing statement:
I have enjoyed learning about Maori patterns and their meanings.

Wind and lift

What causes wind?
We saw in our experiment that cause air ,or ,to move .This is the same force that make the
Wind .The sun heats up the earth, and that causes the air to heat up .That hot air then moves
upwards,
and other cold air has to move in to take it's place. This movement of the air is the wind
The picture above shows how it works with the sun causing warm air

Effects of the wind

If we had no wind the weather would always be the same

The Physics of Car Racing

1 What has been done to make this a 'fair test

All the cars are all the same.
We all get the same things to add onto our cars.

2 What forces are needed to make the car go faster and how have you modified your car accordingly?

We put play dough on the front of the car because it will weight it down and make it aerodynamic. This is wind resistant so the wind will flow over the car and not stop it.

3 What forces are needed to make the car stop and what adjustments have you made to to try and stop it by the line?

We need drag to stop the car. So we will put play dough on the back of the car to slow it down

4 What forces are needed to make the car travel further and what adjustments have you made to achieve this?

A balanced force so we will put play dough evenly around the car.

5  In a google drawing , photograph, your car and clearly show - the forces acting on it
                                                                                                - any changes you have made and
                                                                                                        how they effect the forces
